After the security town hall, I spoke with Clint Atherton and demonstrated how the guest WiFi at the clubhouse is Frontier, and we get 4mbit speed. Our home internet with Spectrum is 500mbit - 4 is ridiculously slow!

He said that the association offices use fast (multi gigabit) Frontier connections, because Frontier is faster and otherwise superior.

I told him that we get free out of home WiFi access with our Spectrum service. And that Spectrum has 10s of thousands of WiFi hotspots around the country that we all can use for free. I see no reason why Spectrum wouldn’t set up WiFi access throughout SCPD for no cost to us, and at much much much faster speed than 4mbit.

It would benefit all residents and guests anywhere in SCPD. Golfers on the golf course, people walking or walking their dogs, people at the clubhouses.

Clint is looking into it and will get back to me.

In the meantime, we all do have access to the out of home WiFi service where Spectrum has hotspots. Like in the back of Walmart where my cellphone has 0 bars of signal.

If you go to the above link and create an account, you will get a few benefits.

    • you can download a WiFi profile to your phone. Then whenever you’re near a spectrum hotspot, your phone will automatically and safely connect.

    • you can use your new spectrum login and password to activate service for streaming apps that we have in our bulk TV plan. Specifically the MAX (HBO) app.

    Hi Mike,

Do you mean that the office believes that Frontier is superior to Spectrum?

    Yes. For business purposes.

The main benefits of spectrum are live TV and dodgers games on tv.

With frontier, you would need to buy live tv from YouTube or sling or something similar. If you care about live TV…

Personally speaking, I'll take Frontier over Spectrum any day. Not sure I understand all the different configurations and MB etc etc but I stayed with Frontier and am very happy. I know it is costing me a lot more than Spectrum but that's my choice.

The advantage of Frontier is that it is fiber optic. Spectrum is coax cable.

Coax goes fast download speeds and relatively poor upload speeds. Fiber optic is the same fast speed in both directions.

Download is when you fetch mail or load a web page in your browser.

Upload is when you send email or video feed from your door bell or other cameras, zoom, upload photos you took to the cloud, sending of attachments to email or text messages.

More info than I need...just know I am happy with FIOS and I thought it was ridiculous that after all the digging and installation Verizon did with FIOS, we opted for Spectrum.

I agree with you that fiber optic is much better and I too was disappointed that the HOA made the choice apparently for only the homeowners to go with Spectrum while the Office kept Frontier. I have heard that the speed of Spectrum Cable lowers with each person signing onto to it.

If you read the fine print, Spectrum offers speeds up to whatever speeds you are paying for.

Spectrum and Frontier bid against each other for the bulk contract. Spectrum paid like $2m while frontier offered $1.8m. This is a kickback, but typical of service providers contracts. The numbers are roughly accurate.

The big thing about Spectrum is that they have the Dodgers games on their cable TV. I can appreciate that in SoCal we have a lot of residents who are Dodgers fans.

Also, Frontier went through bankruptcy and the board used that as an excuse to change the bulk contract.

I stayed with Frontier because of the TV offerings.

I was against it at the time. I was looking at Nextdoor posts a few days ago that I made back then.

I sent an email to the guy running the committee making the decision, and was ignored.

Count me as another domain expert whose opinion is ignored.

🙂 So Far we are three for three...Poor HOA decisions for: Spectrum: Design for Boulevards and now Solar. I have found that each place that I have had homes has had a different what I call a "Culture".

Ignore the bit about free trial. Start with the “To automatically connect…” part.
